We Love

  • Costa Rica bakers smile!
  • All Boston locations we visited.
  • Costa Rica coffee presentation. The pictures of the coffee servings look amazing.
  • Blackboards at New York City Broad Street and 325 Chestnut, Philadelphia locations.
  • NYU location vibe and atmosphere, and food preparation not visible from front counter.
  • Internet orders pick-up bookcase on Walnut St. Philadelphia and Tesser Bld. Stamford, Ct.
  • The bread, food, and the Hearth of course.
  • Illuminated Menus in Costa Rica Locations.
  • Table with coloring material for kids at 230 tesser Blvd, Stamford.

Issues standing in the way of COSI becoming an "A" brand highlighed by the visit comments:

  • COSI is not exploiting its strategic assets to its full potential. Costa Rica Santa Carolina location investigation reveals the magic created during positive interactions between customers and friendly bakers. Exploit this by creating powerful stories that permeate the whole marketing. Replicating Hearthstone has $1.6MM AUV potential, adding the Santa Carolina magic to Hearthstone model might lift AUVs above $2MM.
  • Clutter (physical and on the menu) is a main issue at Cosi. Less is more. COSI goes out of its way to confuse its customers, resulting in an inconsistent customer experience. Have we heard the Santa Carolina reviewer complaining about a lack of choices at that location? Look at how clean this location looks. I am not seeing any cookie turrets at that location.
  • COSI has not developed 3 to 4 cravable dishes supported by powerful product stories to increase the numbers of repeat visits.
  • Branding conflict: It's about COSI not Xando. And lack of brand identity. (We just heard on 12/9/2015 that the Xando sign on Washington St in Chicago is gone).

Arlington, Va, 10/31/2015 (Rating B)

Anonymous: This visit I would rate a B. It took a minute to get service at the counter, but the food came out quickly and was prepared well (hot, fresh, and presented well). I've been to this Cosi a few times starting this summer and it has improved since my first visit.

Baltimore Cosi 100 S. Charles Building, Baltimore, 10/26/2015, (1 location, Rating A)

Anonymous Customer: Store much nicer.  Folks are very friendly.  Right across from the Convention Center which is arguably a better location. Vastly improved from what was here before and much better location.
update on 11/5/2015 from same individual:  Cosi Baltimore was absolutely booming at 12:15PM today...they have the line running much more smoothly now.

Berwin, PA (11/4/2015, Rating: C)

After Bryn Mawr, PA, Jennifer drove to Berwyn.  The store was huge, but located in a sleepy shopping center in a seemingly endless row of shopping centers.

  • The flooring looked much better, instead of old varnished wood they used porcelain wood-look tiles, which is much more durable and modern.

  • The entry way was similar to other locations, with a hallway leading past pictures of food to the hearth and registers.

  • Again, the banquettes were old and upholstered and the chairs were chipped.

  • Rating: B/C

  • Michael assigns a C for failure to refresh the store.

Boston, 8/21/2014 (13 locations, rating A)

On August 21, 2014, we visited a number of the Boston (Hearthstone) Cosi locations.  All were well located in the middle of busy commercial districts.  We began our tour around lunchtime, and the locations were very obviously busy from about 11am to well after 1pm.  The staff was friendly, the locations were clean and efficient, and the food was good.  Some of the newer locations (Seaport) had more modern decor while some of the older locations had a slightly older look, but clean.  We were excited to be both shareholders and customers of this exciting food concept.  During this visit, we tasted the bowls for the first time.  While we disagreed on the value of the bowl offering as an addition to the menu, we could not disagree that they tasted good.

Boston is the jewel in the Cosi organization.

Bryn Mawr, PA (11/4/2015, Rating: C)

Jennifer: Te store was located in a busy shopping / dining center, next to a frozen yogurt store in a suburban area.

  • It was a little late for lunch, but there were still a few people eating a late lunch inside or outside.

  • The furniture looked a little better, no ugly upholstered banquettes, but still the chairs showed wear.

  • The flooring was stone (not lacquered wood) which is more durable and showed less wear.

  • The store inside felt more like an urban location, with smaller tables, stone floors, and pickup at the register (instead of the suburban number card system). The registers were less cluttered.

  • Rating: B/C

  • Michael assigns a C for the consistent clutter theme of COSI.

Central Valley, PA (11/4/2015, Rating C)

Jennifer visited a Cosi located ina a shopping mall in Central Valley, PA.  She arrived just as lunch was beginning, and there were a few people eating.  Observations:

  • Furniture and flooring were consistent but dated and aging.  Could use an upgrade.

  • The store flowed well, with a hallway directing diners to the registers.

  • At the register, the counter was so full with those cooler displays of chia shots, drinks, and fruit that I could not put down my stuff to order.  It feels very cluttered, this is a consistent theme.

  • Give it a B/C

  • Michael input a C for this store as COSI maintains clutter throughout the system. COSI fixes the clutter and it gets a B at this location.

Chicago

233 W. Monroe (11/10/2015, Rating C)

Michael, 5 more pics coming in second e-mail. Went to this location for breakfast ~8:30am. Was a decent group of customers ~10 (they are seated on the left half of the restaurant that I didn't get a good picture of. Overall the location presents well from the exterior. It is in the lobby of a 20ish story office building (bldg. I used to work in actually). Also attached to the building is a Chipotle that opened ~3 yrs ago and took a big chunk of traffic from this location. Staff was friendly, ordered the florentine wrap which was mediocre and only about 1/2 way warmed through...And here is the recurring theme....CLUTTER!! Omg, look at the pickup counter. A dozen or more pickup tags scattered about, napkins, bags, cloth, etc. Not a very good look. Also, the random fruit stand in the middle of the lines, the drink boxes akwardly placed in front of the registers again. It doesn't seem like management understands clutter is not a good thing. Menu boards were fine. This location had the 'conventional' or 'old format' of order placement a la Panera. Order/pay at the register and then pick up to the left when your number is called (pagers at Panera). Overall the location flirts between a C+/B- IMO. Great location, but management could do much more to capitalize on it.

The location is kind of a small format/kiosk type location. Itwas relatively clean, minus the visible garbage bag (captured in one of the pictures attached). I went during off-peak hours (3pm) but there were still about 7 customers seated. I ordered one of the bowls to see how the preparation here compared to my experience at Clark and Lake. It was much more efficient (total serve time <3m). Also, the portion was significantly larger, I actually couldn't eat it all. The cashier wasn't the friendliest, and the positioning of the drinks bin (right in front of the register) was a bit akward as it forced you back about a foot and a half when you were paying. Had to kind of akwardly reach over it to hand the staff your payment card/cash.

Now to the biggest problem. The brand imaging/signage was basically non-existent on the exterior. Small white letters with the word COSI was the only signage. No sun/moon symbol, or other Cosi branding. This, IMO, is Cosi's biggest problem. Inconsistency. Everyone recognizes the McDonald's arches, everyone knows the Starbucks Siren. Everyone also knows what to expect and what they will be delivered when they enter a McDonald's or Starbucks. The Cosi team should maybe read the story of the Starbucks Siren so they understand the thought and development process of a strong brand logo and the story it tells (below). Cosi branding and signage is all over the place. So is the service, the food quality, the portions, etc. Overall, I'd give the location a B (a B- if that was an option).

Clark and Lake (10/30/2015, Rating C)

Anonymous Customer:  Based on the context though I would caveat it could easily be an A if they ironed out all of the operational issues. It is a prime location.   Overall kept pretty clean and looks good. Problem is logistics of ordering at counter on left, paying at counter setup on right, if ordering coffee you go to another area for accoutrements. It's an operational mess, especially during busy times as people are just cluttered around everywhere. Take this morning for example. I order my Cosi Club bagel sandwich. I wait around 3-4 minutes to pick it up. Then I have to go wait in line for 2-3 minutes to pay b/c only 1 register open. Meanwhile, my hot sandwich is cooling off and I'm wasting time doing something I could've done while food cooks. Its not ideal. It is also very confusing during lunch rush where you go to order/pay/pickup. Still using paper, hand-written tickets. Staff could be friendlier as well. Have overheard lots of people talk about order process confusion over the past several months. I would say from an aesthetics perspective its a B. Staff is a C-. Operations is a D. Overall, C.

Chicago, Franklin & Washington St, (July 2015, Rating A)

Michael and another investor visited this location in July. This location is well located, has a lot of foot traffic, and the staff is friendly. Michael spent 2 hours watching customers at lunchtime. The store was jammed packed and the line moving (See the bottom 2 pictures). Customers are happy, Michael is happy. Michael noticed that the circular arrangement of furnitures made this location very social. It gave it a great vibe. This is a great location.

1 con: Michael is not a big fan of branding conflicts. Why the Xando coffee. WHY? more confusing the customers. Anyone at Cosi reading this .... please stop the madness. (see sixth picture).
To understand the investment thesis compare the Franklin & Washington pictures to the Mount Kisco Pictures further below. The Mount Kisco of the COSI organization are brand degrading locations and must be shut down if not fixed ASAP.

Chicago

NW Memorial Hospital (12/2/2015, Rating A)

The location looks amazing. Have a great black and white poster as you walk in of the original Cosi parisian cafe. Staff was very friendly despite a huge group of med students coming down (10+) and slamming them with free coffee orders. Location was very busy at 12:30 but still had avg. serve times in the 2-3m range. Only questionable things I saw were a bit of order confusion (no signage to denote where to order salads vs. soups/sandwiches; instead had a staff member constantly asking guests if they were all ordering salads), decent amount of clutter at the register, and then saw a guest having to bag their own food to go. The order takers didn't ask for here or to go, they gave everyone the order as if it were 'for here'. Other than that the location was awesome. Bright, clean, smelled great, food was tasty, no mutterings of dissatisfaction from guests.

As a note, this location is part of the NW Hospital Campus Pavilion. It is also adjacent to a Lyfe Kitchen (another fast/healthy casual concept) and there is also an Au Bon Pain in the pavilion. I was in a rush today but when I visit again I'll check traffic at the other two restaurants as a comparison.
Across the street is another pavilion with multiple fast casual restaurants including Protein Bar and another ABP.

@rjdourney If all $COSI locations were like the NEMO Chicago one I'd have no complaints. Greenfield opp. is there but must fix legacy issues.

Connecticut

Greenwich, CT (Nobember 2, 2015, Rating: C)

Jen visited the Greenwich, CT store on Monday, November 2.  The store was located along a commercial street, in a shopping center with a grocery store, bank, and fitness studio.  There was plenty of parking.  I went in around 11:45, left around 12:30.  The store was not crowded, but there were a few diners in for lunch.  Overall I rate the location a C, because of the floors and somewhat mismatched furniture.

  • The store was quite large, with plenty of seating.

  • The floor was in need of a serious upgrade.  The varnish on the wood floor was severely damaged.

  • Most of the furniture was uniform, except for a few stray red chairs that did not match, and a few new communal tables that are much nicer than surrounding tables.

  • The registers were cluttered, in the same way that we have seen at other stores.

  • Traffic moved nicely into the store, with a knee wall clearly leading people from the front door to the register bank.  Note that there was no cluttered picture wall.

  • The staff was friendly.

Elkins Park, PA (11/4/2015, Rating C)

Jennifer visited the Elkins Park location at around 1pm.  The store was crowded!  There was plenty of parking and it was adjacent to a cell phone store and a Walgreens.

  • Again, diners moved easily from the front door, past a wall of cosi food pictures to the hearth and registers.

  • Again, the registers were highly cluttered.

  • Flooring and furniture was dated but consistent.

  • Rating: B/C

  • Michael assigns a C because of the clutter.

Exton, PA, 11/1/2015 (Rating B)

Anonymous: Great location in a "town center" type of mall next to high end stores.  Visited at 3pm on Saturday.  Store was very clean and moderately crowded.  Has a loft or industrial look and feel.  No clutter on the walls, in fact they had large pictures of art work that was painted by local artists and for sale.  Food was great and staff was courteous.  They even asked if I had a question when they saw me taking pictures! Cosi served the Brazilian Steak Bowl in a salad bowl. Displayed in poster as being served in an oval bowl. Still better than Chipotle.

Noticed an older couple came in an had difficulty seeing the menu, the staff promptly handed them a paper menu to read. My wife did say the bathroom was gross. Fountain drink station located in back of store.

Jennifer's last stop in Pennsylvania was Exton, which was well located on a pseudo-urban tree-lined “main street” with parallel parking on one side and a large parking lot on the other. Her rating is consistent with the anonymous reviewer.

  • The store was big and it flowed more like the urban stores, with order and pickup at the counter as opposed to the number card system.

  • The chairs looked a little better than some of the other PA stores.

  • The floors were concrete and looked a bit more modern & durable.

  • The registers were cluttered.

  • Give it a B.

Mount Laurel (11/21/2015, Rating C)

Mount Kisco, NY, 10/27/2015, (1 location, Rating D)

Jen visited the Mt. Kisco location at 10:45am.  Observations:

  • The paint was chipped on the handles of the door to enter the store.

  • The store was not crowded, but there were 2 other groups there when I entered.

  • The new menu boards look much less cluttered.  I don’t remember what menu items were removed, which means they did a good job paring things down in my opinion.

  • I ordered a sandwich, but was told the bread was not ready since lunch begins at 11:00.  If I wanted a sandwich, I would need to wait 10-15 minutes.

  • I noticed a bar set up taking up a lot of space, but instead of bottles of liquor they just had 2-3 types of beers.  It looked strange and uninviting.  At 10:45am I would not expect a crowded bar but without liquor it is hard to draw a bar crowd.

  • They had a completely empty display refrigerator, yet a counter next to the coffee was cluttered with drinks in buckets of ice.  Space is not used efficiently.

Mt.Laurel, N.J. 12:30pm on 10/28 (Rating: B)

Anonymous Customer: Had lunch with a friend who hadn't been to Cosi in years.

- Lighting on menu boards was poor.
- Chia shot was missing as were drinks in refrigerator by register.
- Still no refresh at this location. Furniture looking a little worn. However was very clean.
- Was as busy as I've ever seen. Only 3 spots open to sit down to eat.
- Despite the crowd service was friendly and staff jumped to fill drinks and Chia shot when I mentioned.
- Food was great and came out extremely fast. Friend mentioned who nice it was not to stand at the counter       like Panera.
All things considered a solid B.

55 Broad Street, NYC, NY (10/29/2015, Rating A)

Michael visited this location. This is a great location with plenty of foot traffic from surrounding Wall Street buildings. The store is bright with minimal amount of clutter. The location manager was very friendly. She explained that COSI operation was very helpful in improving the flow in the store by tweaking a few things. She says the store is jammed packed from 11:30am to 1:30pm and it flows great, much better than it did before RJ was promoted CEO. This is great news. The staff was also very friendly. The idea of having a chalk-board column for promotion is more appealing to me than having a bunch of posters scattered around the footprint. I came out of this location with a smile.  It beats any sterile posters in any locations I visited. The smiley face has something to do with it. This I think is the method they should use in all locations for communicating with customers. It feels very human and fun! Chalk-boards columns (1 in each location) would also allows COSI to experiment with new dishes in certain locations without having to change all the menu boards. Having a process to maximize the number of experiments without cluttering the whole organization is critical to find out what dishes delight customers.

461 Park Avenue South ( 10/29/2015, Rating B)

We visited this store in July and we gave it a rating of C. This time around we are giving this store a rating of B. The big change here is that they have moved the cash register at the end of the lines where an unappealing counter used to be. Because of this tweak, the line is moving very fast. There is construction in the building and that is affecting traffic we believe. Once this project is completed, we believe customers will walk in. The staff was friendly and the store looks awesome.

New Rochelle, NY, 10/28/2015 (Rating B)

Anonymous: I had lunch today in the New Rochelle NY Cosi today. I have been in this store a number of times. I believe this is a company owned store. The store has always been clean, and is located in a strip mall kind of location, a nice corner unit with plenty of parking. Lunch time is always very busy with a line. This store benefits from the nearby Ursuline School for Girls, grade 6 thru 12, who seem to swarm this location at lunch time. I also always see "stay at home Mom types" eating salads with their children eating pizza. It was day 2 of the Turkey/Stuffing sandwich promotion, so to investigate consistency, I decided to order the same sandwich I had yesterday from the Secaucus location. The consistency was on point. No disappointments at this location.

Newtown, PA. (11/4/2015, Rating A)

This is a suburban location in a shopping center.  I was there at around 7:30pm, just prior to 8pm closing.  There were several families eating dinner there.

  • The outside of the store was quite nice, with stone columns and glass doors.

  • The flooring was in pretty good shape, but the tile was not consistent with other Cosi tile (white instead of dark grey).

  • The furniture was in pretty good shape.

  • Some of the tables had debris on them, should not happen.

  • The registers were cluttered even though they had several side tables to put the impulse buy items.  It was as if they said “Gee, if some impulse buys are good then lots of them must be GREAT!”  Overkill if you ask me.

  • Give it an A/B.  Clean the tables and registers and it’s an A. Michael assigns an A to balance the B/C ratings moved to C.

Philadelphia

36th Street, Philladelphia, PA.  (11/4/2015, Rating B)

This is also an urban location, right by UPenn campus.  I was there in the middle of the afternoon (2:30) yet it was quite busy with students and others eating a late lunch or an afternoon coffee.

  • The setup was urban, where you order in one location and pay in another (rather than the suburban number card system).

  • The flooring was a mix of stone in good shape and some wood that definitely is showing wear.

  • There were a few tables and chairs downstairs with more upstairs.  Again, furniture was in ok shape but not great.

  • There was a good amount of outdoor seating available.

  • Give it a B.

Anonymous: Visible from street. Signage lit and readable. Clutter free. Bookcase with orders from online.

1700 Market St. (11/2/2015, Rating B)

Downtown location.  Same issue with not seeing boards. This is a issue again and again. Hard to keep a line moving when everyone is squinting at a dim sign with a plethora of choices. Hearth facing foot traffic. Draws some eyes inside. Larger location that did not seem to have a clutter issue. Pay here sign right by drinks. Again the mojito lemonade on ice got me. If not there wouldn't have bought it. Music and good lighting here, except for menu boards. Funny how Chestnut St location can be the same company. Tables by Windows were dirty when I came in. Balcony seating is nice considered shoppers and foot traffic at this location.Table at entrance with paper menus. Might be better served being close to order counter. People walking back and forth.

Fix signage issues and stay clean. This should be a showcase location. Too much traffic in this part of city not to be.

General observation from visiting 3 Philadelphia locations this morning: 1. Signage and lighting obviously an issue.

I spent 17yrs in retail management. Obviously cost controls were always on our mind. I find that there is more than enough staff it seems at all times. That's great for the customer and service. However shows me that labor line could use a little trimming at each location I visited. That said if you can deliver the comps then no one ever complains about that.

As a manager I had to canvas local businesses. Offer discounts and the like. Talked to some people inside 1700 Market St shops and they weren't offered any incentive. While annoying to a manager, canvassing gets your location know by all the local workers. City Hall is right down the street.

Everyone should be about driving sales. Add ons. Never was I hit with a suggestion at the register, would you like a drink, coffee, soup, desert. Suggestive sales are a necessity at this level. It's retail elementary school.

Lastly I agree with you, tell the story of the company. Makes it seem authentic. Going to jump on the train. Thanks for letting me help.

Philadelphia

235 south 15th St. (11/2/2015, Rating C)

Well lit. Small location so signage is really an issue here. One board by ordering counter. Second board by register. During breakfast customers going back and forth to order and pay. Watched as it created confusion. With a smaller footage, signage and clutter is harder for them to deal with.  Matching furniture and clean. Broken door facing locust st where most traffic seems to come from. Right next to high speed line creating nice traffic. Bathroom needs attention. Nasty even taking into account city location.

With bathroom addressed this is a B. As it stands C.

Philadelphia.

325 Chestnut, Philadelphia (Rating: C)

Anonymous: Was so dark and empty that I thought they were closed. Again could not see menu boards without being up against glass by where you order. Paper menu was on counter. Clean. Bathroom included. So much signage that I was overwhelmed. Dining area was clutter free and open. No cosi logo outside. Didn't know it was cosi till I was right there. Other businesses have awnings around this location. Put them up so it looks like other Cosi's. Get some lights on. No one can tell it's a cosi or order from the dimly lit board. Only location I've been to that employees haven't been friendly and engaging. Took one photo with no lighting assist to give an idea. Other 2 are backlit.

This location needs to look like other Cosi units. Two blocks from tourist area independence hall, liberty bell. They are traveling. Possibly looking for something they know. Or better yet have never been to Cosi. This is not how you impress a customer. Disappointed.

Only reason not a D is close proximity to tourist trap. Without the location this should be closed.

Jennifer: This is an urban COSI located on a nice street corner downtown.

  • The chairs and tables were dated but clean.  There was plenty of seating.

  • The floor was stone and in good shape physically, but could stand to be swept. Given the time (11:30am, right before lunch), the floor should not be dirty.

  • The outside awning was black and white, not consistent with the colorful logos in the suburban locations.

  • At lunchtime, there was a steady flow of traffic for both eat-in and dine-out.

  • The staff was quite friendly.

  • The registers were less cluttered because they put the “impulse buy” items in coolers near where customers wait in line instead of on top of the register bank.

  • Give it a B.

Plainview Cosi, NY, (Rating C, could be a B easy with table in the entrance and more clutter removal)

Visited by Michael Bigger on many occasions during 2015,

The second picture was taken today on 10/27/2015. As you can see, Cosi is still failing on the menu boards clutter. They are better than the first iteration displayed well below.  I need a magnifying glass please! Oh, how do you like the towering cookie rack near the cash register in the second picture? Did you know they sell gummie bears on these shelves? This deserves a frou frou award. How about the table in the entrance in the third picture? What is the purpose of this table with a plastic can? This table is driving me nuts every time I go in. And then all the remaining pictures clutter. Cosi has removed some of the window clutter since these pictures were taken but clutter remains. If there is a fire in Cosi, good luck finding the Fire Alarm among the posters. Cosi Plainview minus the clutter is a pretty good looking restaurant. Cosi often goes out of its way to complexify the experience. BTW ... Why not lowering the divider at the entrance so customers can see the menus as they enter and walk towards the counters? If the management at this store removes some of the clutter including the table at the entrance, its rating goes up a notch.

Rosslyn, Va (11/6/2015, Rating: B)

  • The turkey stuffing sandwich is fantastic.
  • It was almost entirely empty with a few people coming in and out as I was there at 7:45pm. This doesn't necessarily say much because Rosslyn in general is pretty dead at this hour once the business day is over.
  • The service was again a little slower than I'd expect but nothing ridiculous.
  • The store could use some touch up paint as there are quite a few areas where there are small chips in the wall.
  • There were a few boxes on top of the garbage can area that aren't in the way, but could find a less visible home. There was a few signs in the doorway, and the counter is a bit crowded. However overall it's clean.
  • It is in a fairly central location, across from new commercial and residential construction.
  • There is a bus stop in front where there are tables.
  • Overall rating: Still a B. Not bad, not the completely refreshed product yet.

    Secaucus, NJ, 10/27/2015, (Rating B)

    Anonymous Customer

I was in the Secaucus NJ Cosi today around 10:45am today. I was picking up a "to go" order. This store has always presented well. It is a franchise store owned by the same franchisee that owns the Jersey City location. Given the time, the store was slow, but the workers were busy putting together large catering orders. I actually had a sizable order for about 5 people. The cashier was taking a large order over the phone when I approached the register. She took my order and was very fast and nice. I really thought that my order would take a long time given the activity behind the counter, but it was finished much faster than I expected. This location benefits from multiple adjacent office buildings and a hotel that is accommodates alot of conventions and meetings. I have probably been to this location about 5 times. Overall a good experience and a well run location.

Note that it was day 1 of the Turkey/Stuffing sandwich promotion. I ordered two of those sandwiches with some Signature Salads. All very good.

    Stamford

230 Tresser BLVD, Stamford, CT (November 19, 2015, Michael upgraded rating: B)

    1st vist by Jennifer (10/28/2015, rating C), 2nd visit by Michael (11/19, B)

Jen visited both Stamford locations on October 28.  First location was downtown Stamford, located adjacent to the Stamford Town Center Mall, right next door to several dining options including California Pizza Kitchen, Kona Grill, PF Chang’s, and a few others.

    • The store was clean and inviting.

    • The menu boards look much better, less cluttered.

    • There is still some clutter (wall of pictures and register bank, particularly the buckets of drinks) but the important coffee fixin’ station was neat and easy to access.

    • There was plenty of seating, including some cozy chairs and even a chess set.  I’m not sure how popular those will be, but it makes you think “coffee shop” and may help to improve their post-lunch coffee business.

Michael visited this store at about 2pm. The lunch crowd was long gone, but I got a good sense of how hands on Len Barnaba is managing this location. I ordered a chicken, cheddar and bacon melt. It was delicious. Not a must have but a really really good sandwich. Barnaba was walking throughout the aisles and cleaning up all the little mess on the floor that accumulated during lunch hour. The store was impecable. I even took a photo of the bathroom .... A+. This is a great location and it shows well. I really like the table they set up for kids near the entrance. On this table, you find coloring material for kids. Very nice touch. There was a small chalk board over this table. I love chalk boards to communicate with customers. I am not a fan of TV but I must say the TV on the wall displaying a football game works in this location. The staff was very friendly. Only thing missing is a smile from the baker as the guess enters the location.

Stamford on High Ridge Road (10/28/2015, Rating: B)

My (Jennifer) second stop was the Stamford store in High Ridge Road.  The store is located in a shopping plaza with a Walgreens, a hardware store, and a Five Guys, along a busy commercial street.  There is plenty of parking.  While the location is OK (but not great) in my opinion, the store is quite nice with a large dining area.  There I met the General Manager and Assistant Manager, who both seemed really excited about business lately.  They told me that the bowls are one of their more popular menu items (surprising) and that the new menu boards have been great.  According to them, corporate management is really focused on “the customer” and getting the right message across.  Observations:

    • The staff was quite friendly.

    • A big sign outside the door advertises free coffee every Wednesday (today).

    • There was a good amount of clutter around the registers, although I must confess the drinks in buckets tempted me to buy one - maybe they just need more space per register so they can merchandise without it looking cluttered.

    • The space flows well, with an entry hallway and a separate exit from the dining room to avoid disturbing a line at lunchtime.

    • A half-wall separates the food preparations area from the registers, so customers can at least see the people making the food.

    • Some of the furniture is quite dated (but clean) and the GM said there are some upgrades coming.

Customer 1 reported sub-par service and he was very angry at the staff. I can't post the comments in its entirety. Location not busy at lunch.
